IT’S A RAVE DAVE
Many contemporary artists have drawn inspiration from the free party, acid house moment – which came to prominence in the late 80s and flourished into the 90s until, arguably, the culture became commercialized following the introduction of the Criminal Justice Bill in 1994.
In It’s a Rave Dave, the latest show at Bournemouth’s GIANT Gallery, documentary footage, archive materials and photo diaries provide a historic backdrop for works of art that champion ideas of freedom of expression, community use of the natural environment, and means and modes of organising and constructing gatherings.
The exhibition also presents disobedient objects like make-shift PA rigs, alongside photographic collages, new video works and sound interventions to highlight the impact of policing and politicisation on the culture. It seeks to highlight the impact of the commercialisation of dance music on the freedom of expression of future generations.
Through vision and sound, It’s a Rave Dave looks closely at the relationship between 90s counter culture and its influence on contemporary artists working today. Visitors to the exhibition are invited to immerse themselves in a private soundtrack whilst exploring the show through the format of a silent disco.
